On May 14, 2008 the Ontario legislature voted to open adoption records in that province. The new law will allow adopted adults (18 years and older) to receive copies of their original birth registration forms. Birth parents of adoptees aged 19 and older may apply for information from both the original and amended birth registrations forms. Both adult adoptees and birth parents may file a no contact notice and a disclosure veto. Adoptees and birth parents who are involved in an adoption that takes place after September 1, 2008 will be able to access information subject only to a no contact notice.
The Ontario government anticipates that they will begin taking applications for information in June 2009. Let the countdown begin!
