Opening Adoption Records in the Yukon
As of April 30th, 2010, adopted adults and their birth parents are able to apply for copies of the original and amended birth registrations, subject to no-contact declarations and disclosure vetos.
Both adopted adults and birth parents can apply for non-identifying information. For the adopted person this will include information that was collected at the time of the adoption which that will describe the birth parents, and may include information about interests, hobbies, appearance and ethnicity. Birth parent will receive similar information about the adoptive family. The wait time for this information is approximately 4 months.
A passive registry is also in place where adopted adults and birth parents can register. If a match is made the government will notify the parties and facilitate a reunion.
Both adopted adults and birth parents can request a search be done. If the adoptee/birth parent agrees to a contact, the government will facilitate the reunion. Searches usually begin 2 years after the request is received by the Adoption Disclosure Registry.
Birth fathers, if interviewed at the time of surrender and named on the original birth certificate can apply to have a search done on their behalf. The adopted adult may also request a search for him through the ADR. As long as his name is on file he can request that his name be placed on the registry.
The Adoption Disclosure Registry is offering counseling and can also recommend a councellor who deals with adoption issues.
There is no charge for these services.
